Checking references before submitting a research paper

A prepared example showing a research question, method, discussion and references. It is not a peer-reviewed paper, an empirical study, or an automated benchmark of Zaknor output.

Abstract

This example proposes a reference-checking workflow: confirm the source identity, obtain the relevant text, then match each claim to its supporting evidence. Its descriptive facts come from official Crossref and PubMed documentation. The checklist is an educational proposal; no measured improvement in accuracy is claimed.

1. Research question

How can digital reference checking be organized so a reader can locate the source and inspect the evidence behind a claim?

2. Method and scope

This is a limited descriptive review of two official documents about bibliographic metadata and access to scientific literature. It uses that review to propose practical checks. It contains no human participants, survey, or statistical results, and does not claim to cover every discipline or database.

3. Discussion

A. Confirm the reference identity

Crossref provides metadata for registered works, including retrieval of a record for a specific DOI [1]. These records can help compare a draft reference with the title, authors and publication details of the intended work. If details conflict, this workflow recommends checking the publisher’s page before finalizing the citation.

B. Read the evidence you intend to cite

The U.S. National Library of Medicine describes PubMed as a resource for biomedical and life-science citations and abstracts; records may link to full text at a publisher or PubMed Central [2]. Researchers should record whether they read the full text or only an abstract. This example recommends avoiding detailed methodological claims unless the relevant source text was inspected.

C. Match each claim to its evidence

For each claim, record the supporting passage, table or other source location and any limits on interpretation. This is a proposed organizational step: a bibliography alone does not show which sentence a source supports. When a reference cannot be checked, flag it for review instead of guessing missing details.

4. Practical checklist

  1. Do the title, author and year match the source?
  2. Does the link or DOI identify the intended work?
  3. Was the full text read, or only the abstract?
  4. Which passage or table supports the claim?
  5. Are the evidence limits clear?

5. Conclusion

Separating metadata checks, source reading and claim verification provides an orderly way to review a draft. This is a proposed workflow, not an experiment proving a particular quality improvement. The researcher remains responsible for checking sources and following institutional requirements.
